Ofelia Sandoval is a painter and textile artist from Southeast Los Angeles. Inspired by the landscapes and seascapes of California, as well as the Los Angeles River and the landforms of the region of Los Angeles where she grew up, her work expresses feeling through shapes of color. Working intuitively with pigment and fiber, she breaks real places down to their simplest, brightest forms, searching for the essence and feeling of a place.
Memory and place are central to Sandoval’s work. Rather than approaching landscape through nostalgia or sentimentality, she explores how personal and collective memory can become entangled with place. Through abstraction, color, and form, her work reflects the shifting, layered experience of remembering a landscape without attempting to recreate or idealize it.
